If you spend a lot of time on watch forums, you’ll eventually discover that Vostok Amphibia watches have a reputation as one of the best watch values on the market. But is that reputation deserved? Is Vostok Amphibia the best watch you can buy for under $50?
To answer those questions let’s look at a few facts about the watch and the manufacturer.
Vostok is a Russian company that has been making watches for decades — since the early forties. The company was appointed an official supplier of watches for the Defense Department of the Soviet Union in 1965 and throughout the years has received various international prizes for quality and commercial success.
The first Amphibia watches were manufactured in 1967 in the old USSR. Soviet seamen, divers and submariners used them because of their simplicity and reliability.
Amphibia is not one particular watch model but rather a family of watches. All share the same basic features: they sport a nautical, diver-style design, they are water-resistant to 200 meters, and internally they rely on the Vostok 2416B movement.
The 2416B movement is an automatic, 31-jewel mechanical movement. Vostok has used this movement extensively over many years and it has proven to be reliable. Totally wound watches run at least 31 hours and the average term of service is ten years.
Most cases are made of stainless steel. They are rugged and durable — made for active men who are going to bang the them around from time to time. This watch isn’t going to fall apart when you drop it.
So is Vostok Amphibia the best watch for under $50? There are a lot of watches in that price category and Amphibia is certainly a good choice, depending on whether or not you like the style and design. From my point of view, the Vostok Amphibia gives you a lot for your money and is a tremendous value. I have yet to see another mechanical watch built to this quality at this low of a price. If I do find one, I will buy it.
When shopping for this watch be aware that Vostok sells certain models within the “Amphibia” or “Amphibian” series at a slightly higher price point. These models are Red Sea, Black Sea, Scuba, Reef, and Seaman. They retail between one and two hundred dollars.
