What weird associations do you have?
Look at mine so you know what I am looking for…
I think of my Europe holiday whenever I smell diesel because it reminds me of the tourbus.
When I put on my favourite deodourant, it makes me feel happy and reminds me of playing guitar (which I love doing).
I associate some meals with certain times or actions. Like watching a movie on Friday night and having fish and chips, or thinking of playing a certain game when I have tuna pasta.
Oh I love that smell of rain on hot ground or asphalt, which reminds me of when it happened at my junior school.
For me, songs work the best in reminding me of different times in my life. I even created a list of all the songs in my life that can take me back chronologically through the past 5 years in my life.
The mind is so fascinating, I love these associations. It’s amazing to close your eyes and be taken back to a different time in your life. Associations are most likely to be formed and are the strongest when there is great emotion attached to it. The experiences that have the most emotion in your life are the most likely to develop associations. I also think they are likely when the “trigger” is repeated over and over again, hence why I think songs work so well for me, because they are ones I have listened to over and over again.
Associations can also create thought patterns in the mind that are hard to break out of and they can be bad or good. For example, associating watching TV with eating junk food…
You can use this power to your own advantage if you like. If you’re interested in this look up the NLP technique of “anchoring”. For example, say you are having confidence issues, well all you have to do is any time you feel REALLY confident, install an anchor. It can be a word, or I prefer kinesthetic anchors such as pressing together your thumb and middle finger. Then, when you feel you need a confidence boost, simply bring up the anchor by using the trigger (pressing the thumb and middle finger together).
