What was the synthetic fuel being used by the Germans, toward the end of WWII?
Watching the History Channel, one of the prime targets of the daytime bombing raids were the synthetic fuel factories in Germany. What was this fuel and what was it to replace, Gas, Diesel, or airplane fuel? Has anyone tried to duplicate it?
The synthetic fuel is produced using the Fischer-Tropsch process – you can look this up on Wikipedia but essentially it is taking coal and producing a synthetic crude oil – then producing the different fuel from that. I think you need something like a tonne of coal to produce one barrel of oil. This process is used in South Africa, because they have lots of coal and during the apartheid era they had difficulties importing oil. As I say, look up Fischer-Tropsch for more details.
